Crisis in Meghalaya over power

Meghalaya government's two power deals with private companies seems to have run into trouble with the powerful Khasi Students Union opposing it and the coalition government appearing divided over the issue.

SHILLONG: Meghalaya government's two power deals with private companies seems to have run into trouble with the powerful Khasi Students Union opposing it and the coalition government appearing divided over the issue.

The KSU, which has already sounded the bugle through a three-day agitation this week in the form of office-picketing and a procession, has asked the cabinet to revoke its decision of allotting the projects without international competitive bidding.

"We are not against private companies as such, but we want the process of handing over the state's resources to be transparent and in conformity to the power policy," said KSU president Samuel Jyrwa.

The student body has alleged that the recent decision of the state cabinet to hand over the Kynshi and Umngot hydel projects to private companies violated the state's power policy, which states that any power projects above 100 MW ought to allotted to companies through international competitive bidding.

"We will wait and see till the cabinet meets later this week. If it fails to address our concerns, we will have no option but to intensify our agitation," Jyrwa cautioned.

Normal life was severely affected in the state when the KSU resorted to a two-day picketing in in front of government offices on January 8 and 9 to register its protest.
