VADODARA: French power equipment manufacturer Alstom has set up its research and development (R&D) centre for hydro power sector in Vadodara, Gujarat. The new global technology centre (GTC) will enable the company to focus on specific issues of the Indian hydro market and develop highly-innovative integrated products and technologies for new and rehabilitation projects, Alstom Hydro president Philippe Cochet said.

The centre includes a pelton turbine scale model test laboratory with one of the highest head testing capacities in the world, he said. Alstom has formed a joint venture company for manufacturing equipment for power sector with domestic auto component maker Bharat Forge.

The company will produce super-critical turbines and generator sets for thermal power plants. It also plans to supply nuclear power generation equipment in the future. The company has adopted a lean manufacturing model to sustain the global economic slowdown. It would mean no major expansion of capacity but optimal use of resources, Mr Cochet said.
