Adani group outlines plans for power SEZ in Mundra
The Rs 18,000-crore Adani Group has plans to set up a power SEZ in Mundra. Initially, the SEZ will not be a part of the proposed multi-product SEZ that the group is setting up in Mundra, government sources told ET.
“There are certain issues pertaining to contiguity of land. Setting up a power SEZ would sort out these issues,” said a senior government official. He, however, said the group had approached the government for necessary approvals. The official hinted that eventually, the power SEZ may become a part of the multi-product SEZ.
Adani Power, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Adani Exports is going to set up a 1,200 mw power project at Mundra. Sources said the capacity could later be raised further to 2,000 mw. The group already runs a port here and handles coal imports for a number of power generation companies and corporations across the country. In the first phase, it is planning to set up a 600 mw coal-based power plant at an estimated cost of Rs 2,400 crore.
Sources say the power project will create a complete integrated chain for the company. This thermal plant will use imported coal only. The coal will come to the Adani port at Mundra. Part of the power generated will be used for the upcoming multi-products Mundra Special Economic Zone.
The rest will be sold to the grid through its group company which is into power trading.
