Accident disrupts electricity generation at Tata Power's Mundra UMPP

Development came after conveyor belt carrying coal caught fire, which is operated by Tata Power’s special purpose vehicle Coastal Gujarat Power Ltd.

NEW DELHI: Last week, Tata Power informed the state utilities of Gujarat, Maharastra, Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan that it will not be able to operate its Mundra Ultra Mega Power Project for few days. The development came after conveyor belt carrying coal caught fire, which disrupted fuel linkage for 4,000 mw of plant, which is operated by Tata Power’s special purpose vehicle Coastal Gujarat Power Ltd.

“Bunkers near the power plant had coal inventories to generate power for eight hours and hence there is no impact on transmission grid connected to the Mundra UMPP. The incident took place on November 14 and Tata Power informed us that it will not be able to supply power till November 24. We are waiting for the next update from Tata Power,” said a top executive of one of the state utilities that is drawing electricity from Mundra UMPP. He added that Mundra UMPP was producing 3,800 mw of power before it had to be shut.

The state load dispatch centre that mentions Tata Power’s Coastal Gujarat has not scheduled any electricity supplies from Mundra UMPP. Located on 1,200 hectare site, Mundra UMPP is located in coastal area, south of Tunda village in Mundra taluka, Kutch district of Gujarat. It draws coal through long conveyer belts from the port.
