Venezuela reiterates willingness to give exploration blocks
After signing the joint venture agreement on the San Cristobal oil field, Venezuela has reiterated its willingness to give India exploration blocks in Carbobo 1 and Junin Norte oilfields in the Orinoco heavy-oil basin.
Minister of state for external affairs Anand Sharma, who visited Venezuela from May 18 to 20, had conveyed India���s interest in bilateral investments in the field of oil exploration during a two-hour meeting with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez where senior Venezuelan ministers of foreign affairs , energy and petroleum , light industries and commerce and science and technology were also present.
Mr Sharma, sources said, in particular raised the issue of Indian oil companies participating in the exploration in Carbobo 1 and Junin Norte oilfields. Mr Chavez responded positively to the suggestion, sources said.
Mr Chavez, who is seeking to develop new markets in a bid to wean away from the US, is keen to cultivate India. Correspondingly, there has been an increase in cooperation between India and Venezuela in the oil sector.
India had also invited Venezuela to invest in greenfield refinery projects in partnership with Oil PSUs in an integrated petrochemical complex.
Mr Chavez further confirmed his interest in developing partnership with India, especially in the fields of energy, renewables, science and technology, agriculture and pharmaceuticals. China is already present in a big way in Venezuela in various sectors particularly in oil.
This interest in cultivating deeper ties with India was also apparent in the importance that Mr Chavez has bestowed on Indian ministers visiting his country Mr Chavez, who last visited India in 2005, invited Mr Sharma to his residence for the meeting which lasted for over two hours.
