RIL oil project runs into trouble
Environmentalists here have sought President A P J Abdul Kalam’s intervention to stop Reliance Industries from undertaking offshore oil exploration near Gahiramatha and areas in Kendrapada district.
Gahiramatha is the world’s largest rookery of the endangered Olive Ridley turtles.
Environmentalists have criticised Berhampur University’s marine science department for giving a clean chit to the proposed RIL project. They claim that oil drilling will disturb the movement of turtles and their nests.
Sanjeev Gopal, a Greenpeace activist , claims that RIL’s oil exploration will change the migratory path of the turtles. He claims that the study report does not talk about possible oil slicks and blow outs from the proposed oil wells.
