PSEB recommends extension of GAIL CMD's tenure

PSEB has recommended extension of services of state-run gas utility GAIL (India) Ltd Chairman and Managing Director Proshanto Banerjee till October 2007, when he attains super-annuation.

NEW DELHI: Public Enterprise Selection Board (PSEB) has recommended extension of services of state-run gas utility GAIL (India) Ltd Chairman and Managing Director Proshanto Banerjee till October 2007, when he attains super-annuation.

Banerjee was appointed as Chairman and Managing Director or GAIL with effect from August 27, 2001, for a period of five years, which was to get over on August 26, 2006.

Government sources said that since Banerjee had more than a year to reach his super-annuation age of 60 years, the PSEB and Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas conducted a joint appraisal of his five year tenure on Wednesday.

"PSEB unanimously recommended extension of his service till October 2007," a source said.

The recommendations of PSEB have been forwarded to the Petroleum Ministry for consideration. After it is vetted by the oil minister Murli Deora, a suitable recommendation would be forwarded to Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) through the Department of Personnel and Training.

In May this year, the Petroleum Ministry had denied an extension of service to Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC) Chairman and Managing Director Subir Raha till his super-annuation in 2008. In Raha's case the mandatory joint appraisal of the five year at the helm of the public sector company was not even carried, sources said.
