ONGC to resume offshore drilling

KOLKATA: Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) would resume offshore drillng at Sunderbans area of West Bengal in October, a senior company official said.
"The drilling of the first well in Sunderbans was unsuccessful. It was not commercially viable as the amount of gas was low and the rig was shifted from there.
Drilling will start on the second well there from October," ONGC Director (Exploration) D K Pande told reporters here Tuesday night.
The company was hopeful of finding enough gas to make drilling viable in the second well, Pande said, adding "you have to take the risk to get hydrocarbon."
ONGC had earlier said it would invest Rs 400 crore for taking up offshore drilling in Sunderbans The company had decided to drill four wells at a cost of Rs one crore each.
The company had started the drilling in Bengal offshore in March 2006, after a gap of 15 years.
