New Delhi: The government is not considering any proposal to raise petrol or diesel prices from May 1, Sujata Sharma, joint secretary in the petroleum and natural gas ministry, said on Tuesday.

The statement comes amid speculation that the government may allow state-run oil marketing companies to increase pump prices after voting in key state elections concludes on Wednesday.


Fears of an imminent increase have triggered panic buying, with long queues reported at fuel stations and outages in some areas. Sharma attributed the dry-outs to hoarding and urged consumers to purchase only what they need, assuring that adequate supplies of petrol and diesel are available in the country.

Oil companies have been pressing for a price revision as losses mount.
