No overall LPG shortage: Deora

LPG supplies to distributors were being made by OMCs through indigenous production and imports in accordance with the requirement of customers registered with LPG distributors.

NEW DELHI: The Government on Tuesday said there was no shortage of LPG in the country and the genuinue demand of customers was being met.

"Public sector Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) have reported that, at present, there is no overall shortage of LPG in the country," Petroleum Minister Murli Deora said in a written reply in Rajya Sabha.

LPG supplies to distributors were being made by OMCs through indigenous production and imports in accordance with the requirement of customers registered with LPG distributors.

"However, OMCs have from time to time reported occasional backlogs in certain States/Union Territories due to natural calamities such as floods, road breaches, collapse of bridges and stoppage of work by various sections of employees, transporters and contract labourers," he said.

Deora said the Government had directed Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum to liquidate the backlog by operating the bottling plants on holidays and by extending hours of work.

The minister did not give a time-frame for liquidating the waiting list though he had last week informed Parliament that the waiting list would be cleared by December 15.
