No extension for NTPC CMD Arup Roy Choudhury; to retire tomorrow

NEW DELHI: National Thermal Power Corporation Limited ( NTPC) chief Arup Roy Choudhury will retire from his services tomorrow, after he was denied an extension by the government.

The orders for non-extension of tenure of Arup Roy Choudhury, Chairman and Managing Director, NTPC beyond August 31, 2015 have been issued, Department of Personnel and Training said.

58-year-old Choudhury was appointed as head of India's largest power producer by the UPA government in September 2010 for five years term, which was extendable till he attains 60 years of age, i.e. the age of retirement.

He is the second blue-chip PSU head to be shown the door in the past few months.

In June, the government denied an extension in service to C S Verma, Chairman and Managing Director of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL).

Verma was also appointed SAIL's CMD for a five-year term by the UPA government and was eligible for an extension till he attained the superannuation age of 60 years in September 2019.

The Centre, meanwhile, has not issued the orders for the caretaker or the next chief of NTPC Limited. Though a search committee has been constituted to find Choudhury's replacement.
