Blast at MRPL facility in Mangaluru injures one person

One person was injured as a loud explosion occured at the premises of Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL) near Jokatte in Mangaluru on Wednesday, followed by the emergence of dense smoke.

The sound reportedly triggered concern among local residents in the surrounding areas, with thick smoke emerging from the MRPL unit.

A fire broke out at a refinery of MRPL and one person was injured in the incident, a spokesperson said, as quoted by Reuters, adding that the fire, whose cause was not known, occurred at the coker hydrotreater of the refinery in Mangaluru in southern India at around 0730 GMT.

The area has been evacuated and one person who suffered burn injuries was being treated in a hospital and was out of danger, the spokesperson added.

While operations at the coker hydrotreater were affected, the rest of the refinery was working fine, the MRPL official said.
