Karnataka not to lower tax on petrol and diesel
There was no proposal before the Karnataka Government to lower sales tax on petrol and diesel, Deouty CM Yediyurappa said in the state Assembly.
Karnataka levied 28 per cent sales tax on every litre of petrol and 12.5 per cent per litre of diesel, besides five per cent entry tax, he told D R Patil of Congress during Question Hour.
The government earned Rs 3,076.93 crore revenue from sales tax and VAT on petrol and diesel during 2006-07 while tax collection from all sources was Rs 12,380.31 crore during the same period, Yediyurappa, who also holds the Finance portfolio, said.
He rejected the demand by J C Madhuswamy for exempting tax on diesel used by tractors owned by farmers, saying: "It is difficult to distinguish whether the farmers use tractors for farming or any other purpose".
