India's August crude oil imports fall over 11% month-on-month

Sept 18: India's crude oil imports in August fell more than 11% from the previous month to 19.01 million metric tons, government data showed on Friday.

On an annual basis, crude oil imports were down 3%, from 19.60 million tons in August last year, data from the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell showed.

Imports of crude oil products rose over 9% to 2.72 million tons in August from July, but fell about 40% from a year ago. Product exports were down over 13% to 4.92 million tons annually.


India's fuel consumption in August fell 6.3% from the previous month to 18.61 million metric tons, its lowest level since September 2024.

LPG imports rose to 1.30 million tons in August from 870,000 metric tons in the previous month, while fuel oil imports fell month-on-month to 132,000 metric tons, and were down from 365,000 metric tons in August last year.

Exports of jet fuel fell over 28% annually to 0.40 million tons from 0.56 million tons in August last year.

Petrol exports last month were 15% lower year-on-year and diesel exports were down nearly 19% during the same period.

India has told Washington that new measures to levy tariffs over the purchase of Russian oil could impact bilateral ties, the South Asian nation's foreign ministry said on Thursday, hours after the U.S. made a new move to punish such buyers.

NOTE: The data for imports and exports is preliminary because private refiners share numbers at their discretion.
