GSPC in talks for import of LNG

Both Shell's and Petronet's terminals are connected to GSPC's gas grid in Gujarat.

NEW DELHI: Gujarat State Petroleum Corp (GSPC) is in talks with Oman, Qatar, Algeria and Egypt to import liquefied natural gas (LNG), a company official said on Friday.
GSPC wants to import spot cargoes of LNG and use Royal Dutch Shell's terminal at Hazira or Petronet LNG Ltd's Dahej terminal to receive and regassify LNG, the official said.
Both Shell's and Petronet's terminals are connected to GSPC's gas grid in Gujarat.
"There are a lot of fertilizer plants willing to buy regassified LNG at the current spot prices," he said.
India has so far received 10 spot cargoes this year in the range of 8.50 to 11.50 dollars per million British thermal unit.
The official said GSPC was keen to get into LNG business and was in talks with Adani Group and Hindustan Petroleum Corp Ltd (HPCL) to set up a LNG import terminal, possibly at Pipavav or Mundra port.
GSPC plans to build the 5 million tonnes per annum LNG import and regassification terminal in partnership with other energy firms by 2011.
