Govt appoints Sharma as ONGC chairman
The government issues formal orders appointing R S Sharma as CMD of ONGC.
Sharma, who was acting CMD of India's biggest oil producer since May 25 last year, will head the company till January 31, 2011, official sources said.
He was earlier selected for the top job by a head-hunting committee, headed by Public Enterprises Selection Board chairman N K Sinha, after conducting interviews of 28 candidates on June 3 and June 4.
Incidentally, Sharma was also PESB's number one choice in interviews conducted for the job in August last year. However, the PMO had in February this year vetoed his appointment as it wanted the selection process to be widened by inviting candidates from private sector.
Sharma, despite being cleared by all government agencies including anti-corruption body CVC and CBI, had then failed to pass the PMO muster. The PESB panel was scrapped in February and a wider selection committee was set up.
ONGC had been without a permanent head since May 25 last year when the government denied an extension to flamboyant chairman and managing director Subir Raha.
Sharma, being the senior most in the company, was made the acting head. He was director (finance) before being appointed as the acting head.
