Gas row: Govt to file amended petition in SC this week

The government is believed to have decided to amend its petition in the Supreme Court on the Ambani brothers' gas dispute and is expected to move the apex court with the changes sometime next week.

NEW DELHI: The government is believed to have decided to amend its petition in the Supreme Court on the Ambani brothers' gas dispute and is expected to move the apex court with the changes sometime next week.

The amendments in the petition filed by the Petroleum Ministry last month pertain to the part of the MoU that deals with gas supply and will seek to delink Production Sharing Contract between the government and Mukesh Ambani-led RIL from the Ambani family settlement.

A senior official, who is directly involved in the matter, confirmed that the government would possibly file its stand next week.

"A decision has been taken in this regard," he said. The government had last week cured certain technical defects in the petition.

A view towards these changes in the petition emerged at two meetings Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee had with Law Minister Veerappa Moily, Oil Minister Murli Deora and others.

The first meeting on Thursday, incidentally, took place within hours of Anil's address to RNRL shareholders where he had accused Oil Ministry of siding with RIL in the dispute, while the second meeting was held on Friday.

Hitting back at industrialist Anil Ambani for his criticism of Petroleum Ministry, Moily said the government was fully behind Deora and will not make any compromise on its right over national resources.
