Gas leak: Five CPCL factory officials questioned

CHENNAI: Police have questioned five officials of the Chennai Petro Chemicals Limited Factory (CPCL) here, where a gas leak reportedly occurred on Dec 5 rpt Dec 5.

Two officials in the rank of General Manager and three Assistant Managers from the Manufacturing and Maintenance sections met the Investigating Officer here yesterday, a police official told PTI.

However,he declined to divulge details about the inquiry. Acrid smelling gas reportedly leaked from the public sector CPCL factory at Manali in suburban Chennai, causing nausea and eye irritation to people living in several areas.

Two persons had lodged a police complaint against the company for 'releasing toxic gases' and "acrid-smelling gas." Following this, the City Crime Branch had filed two cases against it.

CPCL Managing Director K K Acharya said in Chennai on December 6 that "whatever let out was only flare or steam," and the plant had not released any poisonous gas. He also said if at all "any hydrocarbon oil vapour" had been let out, it was well "within the standards."
