GAIL has successfully completed Dahej-Panvel-Dabhol pipeline, which will provide a lease of life to the beleaguered Dabhol power plant in Maharashtra by supplying natural gas.

MUMBAI: Gas transporter GAIL (India) has successfully completed Dahej-Panvel-Dabhol pipeline, which will provide a lease of life to the beleaguered Dabhol power plant in Maharashtra by supplying natural gas.

The 581-km long pipeline with a 30'' diameter has been built at an estimated cost of Rs 3,200 crore and links two important gas markets of Dahej in Gujarat and Dabhol in Maharashtra, GAIL said in a statement here on Saturday.

The pipeline will also enable supply of natural gas to various cities, towns and industries in areas enroute such as Vapi, Valsad, Navsari in Gujarat and Bhiwandi, Kalyan, Thane, Patalganga, Thapoli and Mahad in Maharashtra.

Petroleum and Natural Gas Secretary M S Srinivasan, on a visit to the GAIL facility at Panvel, termed the completion of the project as a landmark achievement.

The project completion was of national significance as it has rejuvenated the Dabhol project, run by Ratnagiri Gas and Power Pvt Ltd, he said.

Dabhol plant was till now being run on naptha, a fuel that is costlier than natural gas.

For Maharashtra, the project has a lot of significance as it currently has access to gas supplies from only the Bombay High Fields unlike Gujarat which has five gas supply sources.
