Mumbai: State-run gas utility GAIL India is in talks with three to four US liquefaction and liquefied natural gas (LNG) export projects to acquire a minority stake in one of them, as it seeks to diversify supplies and secure long-term LNG sourcing for India following the Strait of Hormuz crisis, said industry executives aware of the development.

"The company is in talks with nearly four LNG export projects to secure long-term supplies. It is open to opportunities to invest in these projects as it looks to strengthen supply security and meet rising domestic gas demand," said a senior industry executive aware of the discussions. GAIL India did not respond to an email seeking comment until press time. GAIL already has an LNG portfolio of about 16.56 MMTPA, sourced from the US, Qatar, Australia and other markets.

GAIL said in its FY26 annual report that tensions around the Strait of Hormuz hit India's LNG supplies, with 52.5% of imports sourced from Qatar and the UAE.
