NEW DELHI: State-run GAIL India Ltd has bid for setting up CNG stations in Syria and and is interested in setting up similar city gas distribution projects in Algeria, Eygpt and Libya, company chairman U D Choubey said on Tuesday.

"We had put in our initial bid with Delta of Algeria for setting up CNG stations in Damascus," he told reporters here.

GAIL, which supplies Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) to automobiles in several cities including Delhi and Mumbai, has pre-qualified and final bids were expected shortly.

Choubey said GAIL had evinced interest in setting up city gas distribution projects in Algeria, Eygpt and Libya.

Recently, Choubey had said GAIL was keen on joining the $13 billion Trans-Saharan gas pipeline that is to supply gas from Africa to the European market. Once built, the 4,300-km line will transport gas from Niger Delta in southern Nigeria through Niger and into Algeria and Europe.
