CPI to oppose marginal hike in petro prices
Opposing a marginal hike in the prices of petroleum products, CPI on Sunday asserted that the Left parties will launch a protest movement if the government went ahead with the move.
"It will be the last straw which breaks the camel's back. Any increase will have cascading effect on economy. The Left parties will launch a movement if the prices are increased," CPI General Secretary A B Bardhan told the media.
The centre, instead of contemplating a price hike, should reduce the customs and excise duty on the crude, he said.
"This would spare the consumers," he said. The Centre was getting additional revenue of Rs 40,000 crore from the excise and customs duty on crude oil in the last two years, he said.
He said the party was in support of a separate Telangana, carved out of Andhra Pradesh. However, the party was opposed to the idea of setting up Second States Reorganisation Commission, as it would delay formation of Telangana, he said.
When some states like Jharkhand, Uttarkhand and Chattisgarh were formed, there was no reorgnisation commission, he said.
On the Indo-US nuclear deal, he said his party opposed the 123 agreement, under the Hyde Act. "There was no change in Left parties' stand on the deal," he said

The decision of merger of banks was a specific violation, he said, adding if it was allowed a number of rural branches will close down, affecting farmers.
