CHENNAI: The Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI) on Wednesday released its patented technology for production of bio-diesel from vegetable oils.

The technology, developed by CLRI Chemical Engineering Department scientists, envisaged production of bio-diesel by "catalytical trans-esterification of vegetable oils," R A Mandal, director, CLRI, told reporters.

He also handed over the technology transfer documents to S P Velayutham, Chairman, Vel Bio-diesel Energy, which had bought the technology for Rs 89.88 lakh.

The process generated glycerol as the by-product, which had enormous industrial applications, he said.

The properties of the bio-diesel had been analysed by Indian Insitute of Petroleum, Dehra Dun and test trials to the tune of 26,000 kms were conducted by the Anna University here, he said.

CLRI has obtained patent for the techology, he said. Velayutham said the first unit using the technology would be set up near Tiruchirapalli, where rice bran was available in plenty.
