CHENNAI: A 683 km-long petroleum product pipeline from here to Madurai via Tiruchirapalli, laid by the Indian Oil Corp at a cost of Rs 409 crore, was on Monday dedicated to the nation by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi.

The longest such facility within a state, the pipeline with a single pump station located at the Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited (CPCL) in suburban Manali would carry petrol, diesel and kerosene to 11 districts of the state.

Speaking at the function, Karunanidhi requested Union Petroleum Minister Murli Deora to clear quickly the Rs 2,650 crore LNG terminals at suburban Ennore Port. The project envisaged handling five million tonnes of imported LNG.

He also requested the Centre to give clearance for a petrochemical complex to the state.

The Chief Minister also wanted the new pipeline to be extended up to Kanyakumari to take petroleum products to the districts in that region, besides a new pipeline from here to Pondicherry.

Deora said his ministry would make all endeavours to supply gas struck at the Krishna Godhavari basin to Tamil Nadu through pipeline to meet the needs of the industry.
