Bypassing Strait of Hormuz: PM Modi-backed IMEC returns to focus as Gulf seeks new oil routes
The Strait of Hormuz carries nearly 20 million barrels per day—about 20% of global oil supply, making it the world’s most critical energy route. Rising West Asia tensions have pushed Gulf nations to plan oil supply diversification, including pipelines, rail corridors, and inland export routes. Saudi Arabia is already bypassing Hormuz via its East–West pipeline (≈5 million barrels/day capacity), ensuring export continuity. The India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor—announced at the G20 Summit 2023—is emerging as a key India–Europe energy and trade corridor. Narendra Modi, Benjamin Netanyahu, and Donald Trump have backed bypassing Hormuz to strengthen global energy security and reduce supply disruption risks.
