BPCL gets Rs. 1,816.65 cr excise demand order

India's state-owned oil major Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) has received a Rs. 1,816.65 crore excise demand order from the Commissioner of Central Tax and Central Excise, Kochi, the company said on Monday. This includes excise duty demand of Rs 476.94 crore in addition to the applicable interest worth Rs 1,339.70 crore and a penalty of Rs 95,000.

BPCL will analyse and file an appeal against the order before the Customs, Excise and Service Tax Appellate Tribunal (CESTAT).

Detailing the litigation, the Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) said that there were 19 Show Cause Notices (SCNs) which were pending for adjudication by the central excise department pertaining to transaction value under the Central Excise law. The Adjudicating Authority (AA) has now adjudicated these SCNs by passing the order dated February 21, 2026.


Out of the total amount, BPCL has confirmed the demand amounting to Rs 476.94 crore, which pertains to the pre-merger period of Kochi Refineries Limited (KRL) i.e. from September 2004 to August 2006.
