Assam: ONGC detects gas bubbling in Geleki Field; leaking pit sealed
ONGC has identified gas bubbling at Napam Baruwati within Assam's Geleki Field. A specialised team acted swiftly to secure the site and conducted detailed investigations, ruling out buried pipelines as a cause.
ONGC has deployed a multidisciplinary team of experts and secured the site through barricading with continuous surveillance and methane monitoring. Very low quantities of Methane was detected using the hand-held gas detectors.
ONGC has verified all available pipeline drawings and conducted a physical examination of the area using underground pipeline-locating equipment. These investigations have ruled out the presence of any buried pipeline beneath or in the vicinity of the location.

The point (where gas was bubbling) was excavated and the pit was sealed off on 13 July using a chemical barite treatment followed by a cement-concrete mixture. Bubbling has subsided since the treatment. The situation remains stable and is under control.
