Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that there is no shortage of domestic LPG in the state. Sarma, while talking to media persons, said, “I am in discussion and there is no shortage of domestic LPG in the state now. India has now started procuring gas from around 40 countries. Russia is sending oil and gas to India.”

He added, “I do not think there will be a crisis, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi managed to provide oxygen during the COVID-19 period, though there was a feeling that there would be a crisis of oxygen. We did not face any crisis of oxygen. Now Prime Minister Modi will ensure that there is no LPG crisis in the country.”

An official in the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) had said that there is no shortage of LPG as of now, but a 25-day lock-in rule will be enforced to stabilize demand and normalize the supply chain.

He added, “All the eight bottling plants in the Northeast are operating normally. This lock-in rule was there before, but not strictly implemented. It is being done now to ensure that there is no panic buying, hoarding, or diversion. It will help stabilise demand and normalise the supply chain.”

Recently, the government directed refiners to increase LPG output and sell the fuel only to three state-run oil marketing companies—IOC, Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum. This order aims to ensure uninterrupted domestic cooking gas supply amid supply chain disruptions in West Asia.
