'Asom gas cracker' project to be set up in 5 yr
'Asom gas cracker project' would be commissioned in five years time in Assam, Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan said here on Sunday.
The project would incur an investment of Rs 5460 crore, Paswan, in-charge of both Chemical and Fertilisers and Steel ministries, told reporters and claimed it was only the UPA government which sanctioned the project although the move was on for almost a decade.
The project, which is likely to give employment to about one lakh people, was taking a bit of time as 'extra infrastructure' was required keeping in mind the earthquake-prone nature of the region, he said.
Gas Authority of India Ltd was funding 70 per cent of the 'Asom gas cracker project' with the rest being equally borne by the state government, Numligarh Refineries Ltd and Oil India Ltd.
The Centre would provide capital subsidy of Rs 2138 crore in commissioning.
Dwelling on the problem of setting up steel industries in the North-East, Paswan said cooking coal and iron ore were required for the purpose - both of which were not available in the region, forcing the cost of production to shoot up.
The Union Minister said although steel falls under the 'decontrolled market', the private sector manufactureres refused to scale down the price.
