North campus to be a smoke-free zone
World Lung Foundation plans to make North campus a smoke-free zone within the next two years.
Quoting various surveys that estimate 31 per cent males and seven per cent females of Delhi colleges are into smoking spree, G R Khatri, president of WLF-SA here said, "we will make them aware of the ill effects of the menace".
"We proposes to make the North Campus of Delhi University a tobacco-free area within two years," he added.
Besides organising street shows, using hoardings and carrying out group sensitisation programme for building awareness among the students, a nodal tobacco free officer will be designated in every college supported by a tobacco free brigade, Khatri said while giving details of the programme.
For the canteen workers and shop keepers selling tobacco products in the campus, there will be mass education activities about dangers to tobacco use as well as existing legal provisions so that they voluntarily give up their business .
"We can even give them loan with easy interest for their rehabilitation," Khatri said, adding that the project is being financially supported by World Lung Foundation - New York.
