Home license must
The Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh has now made it mandatory to have a license to keep liquor over the prescribed limit at home. As per the revised excise policy in Uttar Pradesh, "individuals will have to obtain a license to purchase, transport or keep in private possession liquor in excess of the prescribed retail limit."

So what's the limit?
According to the new liquor policy of UP, the limit of purchasing, transport, or private possession of only six litres of alcohol per person or in a house is permitted. If you want to store more liquor than that at home, you have to obtain a license from the Excise Department.

It ain't cheap
According to the rules, you have to shell out Rs 12,000 as annual fee for the Home License. On top of that you have to deposit Rs 51,000 as security money to get the license from the Excise department

Who will issue it?
The 'Home License' for liquor will have to be obtained from the district collector. The license will have to be renewed after 1 year.

Tipplers disappointed
The new policy has caused considerable resentment among people. A retired bureaucrat termed the new policy, as 'unwarranted'. "How does the government limit the quantity of liquor that one keeps at home? Six litres is unrealistic because when you host a small party or have guests, the consumption of liquor invariably exceeds the limit," he said.
