PALAKKAD: The Kerala government's liquor policy was responsible for the recent liquor tragedy at Avannesawaram in Kollam district that claimed three lives, Opposition leader Oommen Chandy said on Monday.
Speaking to reporters here, he said sanction of fresh licences to 1,610 toddy shops without increasing toddy production had encouraged trade in spurious liquor.
The excise minister's statement that excessive liquor consumption was the cause of death was not based on facts, he said and demanded that the government make public, the reports of blood samples and post mortem reports of the deceased.
To a question, he said the UDF was not interested in taking advantage of the internal problems in the LDF and CPI-M in the state.
On the Indo-US nuclear deal, he said that CPI-M general secretary Prakash Karat's opposition to it "is the voice of China".
