Gear up to check illicit liquor, CM tells babus

Apprehending that ban on arrack sale and lottery might lead to rise in illicit liquor trade and illegal gambling, Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy on Monday asked officials to keep a vigil to check the menace.

BANGALORE: Apprehending that ban on arrack sale and lottery might lead to rise in illicit liquor trade and illegal gambling, Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy on Monday asked officials to keep a vigil to check the menace.
Despite ban on lottery sale, the threat of illegal online lottery still lurked in the state and there was a possibility of anti-social elements resorting to illicit brew manufacture and sale, he cautioned top officials at a meeting of Deputy Commissioners, Chief Executive Officers and Principal Secretaries of various departments here.
"People might lean towards illegal activities in the wake of lottery ban and arrack sale ban. Steps should be taken to ensure that such a situation does not arise", he cautioned.
In the third such meeting to be convened after the JDS-BJP government assumed office since February three last, he lamented that the mindset of bureacracy which has apathy towards addressing problems of people remained unchanged.
"Officials have a feeling that their position is a permanent fort for them", he said, pointing out to their laxity in performance.
The issue of officials not translating his earlier plea of staying in villages and redressing people grievances weighing more on his mind, Kumaraswamy remarked "Had you people (officials) discharged your duties properly, there would have been no occasion for me to travel to villages and hold Janata Darshan to hear grievances from people".
The officials were duty bound to bring problems of people to the notice of the government, but such a thing never happened, he regretted.
