Alcoholic tendency among youth on rise

The increase in drinking habit among the youth in Kerala is a cause for worry but sharp decline in smoking is a great relief.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The increase in drinking habit among the youth in Kerala is a cause for worry but sharp decline in smoking is a great relief, according to state Youth Welfare Minister M Vijayakumar.

The state-sponsored outfits like Youth Welfare Board would be roped in to organise awareness campaigns and workshops against the dangers of alcholism, Vijayakumar told the state assembly in reply to questions on Wednesday.

According to official figures, state-owned Beverages Corporation sold liquor worth slightly over Rs 3,000 crore in 2006-07 marking a 20 per cent rise compared to the previous year.

Recent studies have shown that drinking habit is prevalent among all classes in society and youth are particularly vulnerable to the menace.
