'Textile industry should implement welfare measures for women'
Textile industry should implement welfare measures, including maternity protection mandated by the International Labour Organisation, for women workers, Angelita Adviento, chairperson of women`s committee, Textile Workers Asia Region Organisation ...
Speaking on the sidelines of a women's workshop here, she said the ILO Convention 2000, which mandated maternity protection to women workers, should be implemented fully.
Adviento, also the General Secretary of the International Textile, Garment and Leather Workers Federation, said the workshop was being held to create awareness about the features of the ILO Convention.
She said that it had been found that women were receiving lesser wages, working for longer hours in industries amidst bad working conditions.
Opportunity to augment their skills through training programmes was also limited.
Besides from India, women workers' representatives from Bangladesh, Jordan, Nepal and Sri Lanka are participating in the workshop, being organised by the local unit of INTUC.
