NEW DELHI: "If you wear a saree, you can see Mohan smiling." This is the kind of advertisement campaign that the Silk Mark Organisation of India (SMOI) will be starting next month to benefit farmers by promoting consumption and exports of silk products.
"The demand for silk products in India is about 25000 MT of silk but we produce only 16,000 MT, importing the remaining amount from China," said SMOI CEO, Ms Vandana Kumar.
SMOI will try to reduce the amount of duplicate silk products and will enhance usage of natural silk by creating awareness among people, she added.
In addition, the Central Silk Board is partnering with institutes like National Institute of Design and National Institute of Fashion Technology to produce exportable that are high on fashion quotient.
In order to enhance production and quality of silk, the Board has undertaken a developmental programme in the Tenth Plan with an outlay of Rs 181 crore.
