No mill of NTC closed since 2015: Govt tells Parliament

No mill of National Textile Corporation (NTC) was closed since 2015, textiles ministry told Parliament Tuesday.

Production activity in all 23 functional NTC mills was suspended due to Covid-19 and normal operations were resumed in some of the mills from January, 2021, which could not continue due to unavailability of working capital and other financial constraints.

“Despite severe financial constraints, full salaries and wages have been paid to all the IDA employees and workers required for essential services up to October, 2024,” textiles minister Giriraj Singh said in a written reply in Lok Sabha.


“However, the remaining workers, who were not attending duties, were paid 100% of their wages up to June 2023. Further, these workers were paid 50
% of their wages from July, 2023 to October, 2024,” he said.

These 23 mills employ 7,391 workers.

In a separate reply, Singh said that under the National Technical Textiles Mission, a total of 168 research projects has been approved including a firefighting suit which has been developed indigenously.

India’s exports of technical textiles were Rs 24,732.68 crore in FY25, up from Rs 16,100.51 crore in FY21, he said, adding that their exports grew 15.53% over the last year and almost 11% CAGR over the last four years.
