NEW DELHI: The young India has started showing its impact on consumerism. The uniforms category within kids apparel market is accelerating its growth and is tipped to touch double digit growth rate in the current financial year, according to industry body Assocham.

As per an Assocham study the category has accelerated its growth rate from 6.5% in FY'03 to 8% in FY'06. The increasing growth rate is attributed to growing demand across the country on account of mushroom schools and growing desire of parents for their children’s educational prospects.

The aforesaid findings are condensed in a paper on the Major Apparel Segment, which valued the Indian apparel market at about Rs 90,000 crore in 2005-06. As per estimates made by Assocham the total domestic apparel market will touch a size of Rs 1,00,000 crore, with school uniforms size rising to Rs 10,000 crore by end of this fiscal.

However, the total kids apparel will touch a level of Rs 16,000 crore towards the end of current financial year against men’s wear size which will grow to touch Rs 40,000 crore while women apparel is likely to touch a level of Rs 34,000 crore towards the end of this year. The remaining projections of Rs 10,000 are for other categories of apparel.
