Khadi production, sale up in last 5 years
Aided by govt initiatives, production and sale of Khadi in India has grown over the last five years.
During 2006-07, production of Khadi was of the value of Rs 491.52 crore, while sales were to the tune of Rs 663.19 crore. Value of Khadi produced in 2005-06 was Rs 468.3 crore while sales were Rs 628.69 crore. In 2002-03, production was Rs 443 crore and sales Rs 577.63 crore.
"Production and sale of Khadi has increased in the last five years and several steps have been taken by the government to promote the fabric," Minister for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Mahabir Prasad said in a written reply.
Prasad said during 2006-07, 8.84 lakh people were employed in the sector.
Outlining measures initiated by the government for development of Khadi, the Minister said 'Mission Khadi' has been launched to convert Khadi fabric into ready-made garments with the help of modern designers.
The Khadi Village Industries Commission has established Rural Industries Service Centres to set up common facility centres. Credit at an annual interest rate of 4 per cent is provided by banks to institutes under the Interest Subsidy Eligibility Certificate Scheme, he said.
In reply to a separate question, Prasad said Rs 35 lakh have been allocated for the Technology Mission during the current fiscal adding that no funds have been released so far.
The Mission, set up to assist MSMEs in technology department, energy conservation and pollution mitigation, would be implemented and monitored by a governing body under the chairmanship of the MSME Secretary.
