India has been one of the biggest producers of handwoven carpets for decades. Regions such as Bhadohi in Uttar Pradesh, along with parts of Rajasthan and Kashmir, have emerged as a big supplier of rugs to many international markets. What has changed now is the way these products are viewed abroad. Designers and homeowners are treating them as collectible items rather than routine décor objects.
Why global buyers are choosing handcrafted rugs
Two major shifts are driving the demand. There is a renewed interest in craftsmanship as consumers look for products made by skilled hands instead of identical factory-made items. Alongside this, sustainable and ethically made décor has become a priority for many buyers. Handmade rugs fit these needs, which has helped Indian producers enter the luxury segment in a stronger way.
Bhadohi’s continuing role
Bhadohi, often known as the Carpet City of India, remains one of the biggest centres for this craft. Thousands of weavers continue to work in the region, with skills passed down through generations. Many makers in the area are changing their methods by experimenting with new designs, working with interior designers and using online platforms to reach customers in India and overseas.
“In a world moving fast toward automation, handmade craftsmanship stands out as the real luxury. Indian rugs are gaining global recognition because they combine timeless artistry with modern design. And nowhere is this artistry more alive than in Bhadohi, India’s famed Rug City. Customisation is becoming a key trend. Many producers now offer made-to-order rugs based on size, colour and pattern choices,” Mohammad Ameen, founder of Bhadohirug, said.
