Handloom Mark label scheme's reach to be increased

Two labels had been designed - one for the domestic market and the other for certifying export products - by the National Institute of Design.

MADURAI: The Textiles Ministry was taking steps to increase the reach of the Handloom Mark label scheme, launched to popularise hand-woven products and to ensure their genuineness, a Textiles Committee official said on Friday.
The committee had received applications for 50 lakh labels. A two-member team would verify the details provided in the application forms and based on its recommendations action would be taken, Deputy Director of the committee N Jeeva said at a function here last evening.
Two labels had been designed - one for the domestic market and the other for certifying export products - by the National Institute of Design.
Individuals, master handloom weavers, apex and primary weavers' cooperative societies, handloom development corporations, traders and retailers could apply for the label.
The first set of labels for this city, a major handloom hub in the state, was handed over to G Mohan of Gowri Silks by the Tamil Nadu Readymade and Textile Dealers Association President Dhiren K Ganger.
The Ministry had accorded high priority for the handloom sector and the label scheme, being implemented across the country since June last, was part of the measures taken to help weavers overcome the impact of liberalisation in the textile sector, he said.
The 40-year quota regime for handloom products had been abolished from January, 2005.
He said there were 35 lakh handlooms in the country, offering direct and indirect employment to 35 lakh people. One thousand lakh sq mts of handloom production was done in 2005-06, which was 10 per cent of total textile production.
