COIMBATORE: The Centre and textile industry would take necessary action against those behind the campaign that certain Indian textile firms were exploiting child labour in the manufacture of end-products, a Confederation of Indian Textile Industry official said on Tuesday.

Reacting to reports in the United Kingdom claiming that some garment manufacturers in Bangalore were using and exploiting child labour, CITI Secretary General, D K Nair told the media that industry and Government were aware of the instigators of the propaganda.

"This is an old game of some NGOs, who are doing it for their masters. This is to curtail the increasing exports from India and China to that countries," Nair said.

"Though this (campaign) will hurt temporarily, it would die its natural death," he said.

There was a hue and cry from Germany a decade ago, about the Azodyes being used in Tirupur. Similarly, some NGOs in the United States had taken objection to the marketing of rayon skirts from India 12 years ago, he said.

Asked about the measures to tide over the crisis due to rupee appreciation, Nair said textile industry has requested the Centre to establish some mechanism, to ensure refund of State taxes, to the industry.

It has also requested to bring down interest rates and stop cross subsidy given in the power sector, which was ultimately shifted as burden on textile industry, Nair said.
