Cotton ginners on two-day strike
Over 4,000 ginning units across the country will go on a two-day strike on Tuesday in protest against the “high” minimum support price (MSP) of cotton.
We are protesting against the governments decision to fix a higher MSP for cotton. Though the move will benefit the farmers, the ginners will not be able to procure the necessary cotton at the current MSP. MSP is much higher than the existing market price, said Dilip Patel, president of All Gujarat Cotton Ginners Association (AGCGA).
The decision to strike work was taken during the All India Cotton Ginners meet held at Chattral in Mehsana district of Gujarat on November 21. The decision was taken after the government increased MSP for cotton to Rs 2,700-2,800 per quintal for 2008, up by nearly 40% compared with MSP of last year.
