Wimpy goes desi; clocks 50 pc increase in sales

UK-based Wimpy International Ltd on Sunday said it has clocked a 50% increase in its sales within a month, following introduction of Indian food items in its outlets.

MUMBAI: UK-based Wimpy International Ltd on Sunday said it has clocked a 50 per cent increase in its sales within a month, following introduction of Indian food items in its outlets.

"Our sales volume has shot up by more than 50 per cent and footfalls nearly doubled," Wimpy International Ltd Manager (Administration) R Sharma told PTI here.

He, however, declined to divulge any figures. Wimpy's, famous for its burgers and pizzas globally, started selling Indian food items from last month. It also offers its customers south Indian food.

"We plan to soon start sell chaats," Sharma said, adding "we have Indianised Wimpy's in Mumbai."

This is the first time an international chain is selling Indian food items in its outlets, he said.

There are other chains like McDonalds, Pizza Hut, Dominos and Papa Johns among others, but they focus on selling their mother products.

However, to cater to Indian tastes, they have made a few changes in their burgers and pizzas.

"We have started it (the trend of Indianising food offerings) and other chains might now follow suit," Sharma said.

Middle-aged people in the country prefer to have South and North Indian dishes which are much cheaper than burgers which sell for Rs 55-60, he said.
