Tea production rises 0.2 per cent

Tea production in India rises marginally, south reports decline by 4.7 per cent.

KOLKATA: Tea production in the country has increased by 0.2 per cent during January-May 2007 and stood at 226.4 million kilograms as compared to 225.9 million kilograms in the previous fiscal.

As per figures released by Indian Tea Association (ITA), tea production in northern India increased 3.6 per cent at 140.7 million kilograms, while it declined 4.7 per cent in south at 85.7 million kilograms.

Kenya was the only country to register the highest growth in tea production during the period, ITA said.

Tea production in that country increased 61.5 per cent from 106.1 million kilograms to 171.5 million kilograms during the corresponding five-month period.

Sri Lanka recorded the maximum drop in production at 20.1 per cent. The tea output in the island nations stood at 86.7 million kilograms as against 108.5 million kilograms in 2006.

Worldwide, there had been a 10.3 per cent increase in tea production from 529 million kilograms to 583.6 million kilograms.

Average auction prices had also increased in 2007, ITA said.
