COIMBATORE: About 1,600 tea estate workers on Sunday observed a one-day fast at Valparai in the district, demanding immediate settlement of long pending wage revision.

Congress MLA, Kovai Thangam, representing Valparai constituency, led the fast, in which leaders of trade unions, cutting across party barriers participated, police said.

Besides wage revision through tripartite talks between the unions, managements and Government, which were held nine times without any agreement, the workers demanded that the minimum wage be fixed at Rs 100 per day.

The leaders appealed to the Tamil Nadu government to intervene and find an amicable settlement to the issue at the earliest.
