Stir in J&K puts adverse impact on poultry business
Poultry business of Punjab has been badly hit due to continued blockade of National Highway towards J&K by the agitators over Amarnath Shrine land row for over last one month.
In routine, there used to be flow of more than 100 loaded trucks of poultry products daily to the neighbouring states, but as the National Highway was blocked by the agitators, the whole lot had to be supplied to the state market, which caused steep decline in the rates on the simple basis of supply and demand pattern, Sukhwinder Singh, owner of one of the retail outlet of chicken in posh locality of the city said.
Even in the retail market of Jalandhar, Chicken which used to be sold at the rate of Rs 110 per kilogram, was being sold at meager Rs 65 to 70 per kilogram, Singh said adding that as the poultry products could not be stored for long time, the farm owners had no option other than to supply the products for local consumption.
If situation continues for another week, the rates of poultry product would further decline, he apprehended.
Although due to situation of poultry products, consumers were benefited, but the situation was vic-e-versa in case of Apple, as due to steep cut in the supply of Kashmir apple in the Punjab market, rate of the fruit has witnessed a steep increase, Gurdeep Singh Nagra, one of the whole seller of the fruit said adding that the apple which was being sold at the rate of Rs 40 - 50 per kilogram in the retail market, is being sold at the rate of Rs 75-95 per kilogram.
Instead of increase in the retail price of apple, the whole sellers were not benefited, as they were also getting the supply at higher rate, he added.
If the situation continues for some more period, situation would be worse and rates of the fruit may go further up, he said.
