Pulses import stands at 17.5 lakh tonnes

India has imported 17.5 lakh tonnes of pulses during 2006-07 up to January to improve the domestic supply of the commodity and stabilise the prices, Rajya Sabha was informed on Friday.

NEW DELHI: India has imported 17.5 lakh tonnes of pulses during 2006-07 up to January to improve the domestic supply of the commodity and stabilise the prices, Rajya Sabha was informed on Friday.
In a written reply, Minister of State for Agriculture Kanti Lal Bhuria said, the government was aware of increase in prices of pulses during the last two years.
He said total estimated demand for 2006-07 stood at 17.71 million tonnes against the production estimates of 14.1 million tonnes.
Imports of pulses up to January stood at 1.75 million tonnes, he added.
As estimated by trade, the global exportable surplus of pulses is estimated at about 3.9 million tonnes, Bhuria said.
Decline in the domestic prices was dependent upon a number of factors such as domestic production, quantity of pulses imported, demand for pulses and international prices scenario, the minister added.
Onion: NAFED and other state trading agencies have exported or issued NOC for a quantity of 10.43 lakh tonnes of onion during 2006-07 till February 26, against a quantity of 6.99 lakh tonnes exported up to February 28, 2006 which is more by 3.43 lakh tonnes showing an increase of about 49 per cent, Bhuria said in a reply to a separate query.
Bhuria said the centre has not issued any directions to states to promote BT cotton hybrids.
The area under BT cotton for 2006-07 was 34.40 lakh hectares provisionally compared to 12.34 lakh hectare in the previous year, he said.
