Onion prices dip for second day
Onion prices continue to move south for the second consecutive day at major growing centres like Lasalgaon and Pimpalgaon in Maharashtra.
"Prices have come down significantly as a result of the hike in onion MEP by 100 dollars to 445 dollars a tonne," National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) Managing Director Alok Ranjan told PTI today.
He said stocks are sufficient to meet the demand for the next two month, before new crop reaches market.
Prices of good quality onion in the wholesale markets in Delhi, a major consuming centre in the country, today dipped to Rs 1,250-1,875 per quintal from Rs 1,625-2,000 a quintal on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Agriculture Secretary P K Mishra said government is fully aware of the issue of onion prices.
"There is no shortage of onions in the country. Necessary action is being taken to augment the supply in areas where demand is more," Mishra said.
To a query on high prices of onion in the national capital, he said, "NAFED is ceased of the matter and the issue is being taken care of."
Asked about any retail sale of onion through its stalls in Delhi, Ranjan said there would be no need to take that step as prices are softening.
Onion prices in Lasalgaon and Pimpalgaon today ranged at Rs 900-1,400 per quintal as against Rs 1,000-1,700 per quintal yesterday.
Traders said while there is a dip of Rs 300 in the maximum price, the minimum price declined by Rs 100 a quintal.
"The maximum price is paid to export quality onions. Since the export price is very high, the prices dropped in domestic market," a trader explained.
