Milk production likely to exceed 133 mn tonne in 2012-13

Milk production in India is expected to rise by 4 per cent to 133.7 million tonne in the current fiscal, the government said today.

NEW DELHI: Milk production in India is expected to rise by 4 per cent to 133.7 million tonne in the current fiscal, the government said today.

Besides, production of meat and eggs is expected to increase significantly leading to improved supply of these highly nutritious food items, it said.

"The estimate of the milk production in 2011-12 is 127.9 million tonne and is likely to reach 133.7 million tonne this year (2012-13). India continues to be the largest producer of milk in the world," an official statement said.

The per capita availability of milk had risen to 290 gram per day last year from 260 gram per day in 2007-08, it said.

Also, the production of various animal products has shown a steady increase over the years, the government said. Total meat production from cattle, buffalo, sheep, goat, pig and poultry is estimated to reach 5.9 million tonne in 2012-13, as against 5.51 million tonnes last year.

Similarly, egg production is likely to touch 72,500 million this fiscal, from 66,450 million in the last year.

The livestock sector plays an important role in the economy by generating employment and providing income to small farmers. At present, more than 87 per cent of the livestock is owned by farmers having less than four hectare farm land.

The government said small and marginal farmers with livestock are better able to withstand the impact of drought.
